Occurrence

The first time Lara encounters Sharks on her adventures is when exploring the outside of the sunken Maria Doria.
The Sharks encountered in The Last Revelation are actually Hammerheads.
The first time Lara encounters Sharks is right at the beginning of the level The Path to Avalon.

Strategy

The Sharks will only be a danger to Lara, when in the water. You should try to get out of the water and shoot them from outside. If you cannot escape them, you should try using the Harpoon Gun against them. Their attacks are very dangerous and take big chunks out of Lara's health.

In Tomb Raider Underworld

One of the Tomb Raider Underworld's new features is that Lara can use her Pistols underwater against the Sharks. Other options for a weapon are the Spear Gun, or in the Arctic Sea Lara can use the Thor's Hammer.

The Sharks in the Mediterranean Sea Section and Coastal Thailand Section are sated and leave Lara alone most of the time. They will completely ignore her when she's swimming on the surface. However, the Fast Swim style attracts them to attack.

In the Arctic Sea Section, the Sharks seem to have undergone a change: they are much aggressive there. Whether it's due to the different climate or the influence of Helheim is not known.
