Tomb Raider 2013
In the Reboot, it is one of the more important gear items Lara finds throughout her adventure.
Axe Types
Old Pry Tool
The Axe is found as Old Pry Tool in an underground bunker, next to an old gramophone emitting eerie music. Lara can use it to pry open two doors in this underground bunker, one which is just a short-cut and another one, which leads out of this area at the other end of the room. She can also use it to backtrack and open the bunker door that closed behind her, leading back to the first part of the Coastal Forest with the Sheltered Ridge Base Camp.
Pry Axe
After Lara is reunited with some of her fellow crew mates and setting out with Dr. Whitman, the two come across a large gate with an opening mechanism missing a handle. Lara finds that using her pry tool could work, if only it were stronger. Her next task in the game consequently is to collect Salvage, found in crates scattered throughout the island, to upgrade her axe at the nearby Day Camp, The Gate turning it into the Pry Axe.
Climbing Axe
When Lara finally finds Captain Roth, he gives her a red Climbing Axe which she can use to scale the rocky walls and get up to the wolves' den to get the medi-kit that could save Roth's life. From here on out Lara only uses the Axe.
In addition for prying open doors, the Axe can be used to slide down ropes and it can also be used as a melee weapon.
Upgrades
- Main article: Axe Upgrades
Lara can use Salvage at any Base Camp to upgrade the Axe. The only available upgrade is Strengthen.
Rise of the Tomb Raider
In Rise of the Tomb Raider Lara carries two Climbing Axes with her. She can use them to scale walls more easily than in the last game. Again, the Axe can also be used as a melee weapon or pry tool under certain circumstances.
Upgrades
- Main article: Axe Upgrades
As before in the reboot game, the Axe can be upgraded, this time using specific resources.
- Tier 1
- Tier 2
- Tier 3
There are no Tier 4 upgrades for the Axe.
Expedition Cards
In the extra Expedition Modes, the player can use Expedition Cards to modify the Axe. They grant certain upgrades for the Axe.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider
The double Climbing Axes return in Shadow of the Tomb Raider. A new move that can be performed with these is Rappeling. They can not be upgraded.
Gold Edition
In September 2018 players could claim a golden edition of the Climbing Axe by following the official Tomb Raider Twitter profile. For this to work, one had to first sign up for a Square Enix Account on the official web page and connect the game with it. The reward could then be claimed by clicking the corresponding "claim reward" button.
