Most of the time the Cog Switch is used in combination with a timed door.
With each turn of the cog the door is pulled up a bit more. As soon as Lara releases the controls the door will start closing again.
Generally you have to turn it at least three times.
You will find this cog in the levels Guardian of Semerkhet and Chambers of Tulun as well as in some Custom Levels.
