Priestesses of the Sun
The Priestesses of the Sun (also Daughters of the Sun)[1] were a group of special maidens, who surrounded the Sun Queen Himiko[2] in Tomb Raider (2013).
It was the greatest of honors to be selected by the Sun Queen to become a Priestess of the Sun, and the title raised the family of the lucky maiden to the heights of the Yamatai society. The Sun Queen also eventually chooses one of the Priestesses of the Sun to take her place as the ruler of Yamatai.
The daily life of Priestesses of the Sun consisted of being instructed in languages, etiquette, history, warfare - all the skills needed to rule. The Sun Queen is like a mother to the Priestesses of the Sun, being warm, attentive and loving to them.[3]
During the course of the game, four Ancient Scrolls written by Hoshi, one of the Priestesses of the Sun, reveal much about what it is like to be a Priestesse of the Sun. Despite being a wanted position, the Sun Queen also scares her trusted maidens[4] - and becoming the next Sun Queen scares the Priestesses, especially Hoshi, even more.[5]
Eventually the occupation of being a Priestess of the Sun presumably came to its end, as the Ritual of becoming the next Sun Queen was corrupted by Hoshi, leaving the soul of Himiko trapped to a decaying body.[6]
