A Crossbow consists of a bow mounted onto a stock that shoots projectiles, often referred to as bolts. The crossbow has advantages over the traditional bow design, in that the bolt is already prepared to fire at the pull of a trigger, wheras a bowman would have to draw a string back. This saves time and energy and can also keep the arrow ready to fire as the firer changes position. The earliest evidence for crossbows dates back to 400 B.C, to the Greek gastraphetes. Crossbows and bows were both frequently used until gradually replaced by gunpowder weapons such as the flintlock. They continue to see use as target-shooting weapons and hunting weapons.
