Dr. Whitman is one of the survivors of the Endurance's ship wreck Lara meets after Sam gets kidnapped by Matthias.
He accompanies Lara when she goes looking for Sam. He gets captured together with Lara. His fate is as of now unknown, but it is likely we will see or hear of him again later in the game.
Dr. Whitman has a strange fascination for the scavenger's culture and rituals. He even puts down his gun and lets himself taken hostage to get to know the scavengers better, even if Lara warns him that that would be a terrible mistake.
