The Hand Grenades (also Frag Grenades) are introduced in Tomb Raider Legend and they return in Tomb Raider Underworld. These can be used without a grenade launcher.
Tomb Raider Legend
The grenades first appear in the level Return to Paraíso where they are lying on a table inside a house. Lara can pick them up and attach them to her belt for later use. She can carry up to four grenades. Throughout the game Lara will be able to acquire more grenades from fallen mercenaries.
Grenades can be uses throughout the whole game after collecting them, except in the flashback part of the Peru level. They are useful against hard to reach targets, especially mercenaries that are hiding behind covers. Also note that it takes no more than two grenade blast to kill Lara.
