GamesCom is the biggest European gaming convention. It is held annually in Cologne, Germany, usually around August. Of the typically four to five days convention, one day is reserved for press only, the rest is open to the public. In recent years it constantly attracted more than 250.000 visitors (e.g. 275.000 in 2012) resulting in long waiting lines at the developer's booths.

Tomb Raider at GamesCom

Tomb Raider (2013)

In 2012 Crystal Dynamics presented the new Tomb Raider (2013) at the Square Enix booth. Besides a playable demo - a shorter, but improved version of the E3 demo - the fans had the opportunity to talk to staff members involved with the development, like Global Brand Director Karl Stewart and Community & Communication Manager Meagan Marie at a Community Event held on Wednesday evening, as well as most of the staff of the Hamburg Square Enix office. Overall the game received enthusiastic reviews.

Rise of the Tomb Raider

In 2015, three months before the scheduled release of Rise of the Tomb Raider, a new demo[1] was shown at the Xbox Media Briefing before the official opening of Gamescom showing a lot of combat and sneaking through enemy lines. Later at the Xbox booth a extended Syria Demo[2] was presented in public. It featured more gameplay and puzzle elements. On Friday evening a Lara Croft Cosplay event was held on the Xbox main stage, followed by a community dinner where members of the community had the chance to talk to developers and representatives of Crystal Dynamics and Microsoft.
