Flares are part of Lara's inventory since Tomb Raider II. She can use them to see in the dark.
In The Angel of Darkness there weren't any Flares in the inventory. In Tomb Raider Legend there is a flashback level, where Lara will use Red Flares, but besides that she has a PLS (personal/portable light source) in Tomb Raider Legend. The PLS is also in Tomb Raider Underworld
