Flares are part of Lara's inventory since Tomb Raider II. She can use them to see in the dark.
They have been taken away from her again in The Angel of Darkness. In Tomb Raider Legend there is a flashback level, where Lara will use flares, but besides that she now has a PLS (personal/portable light source).
