Alex Weiss is one of the characters in the Tomb Raider (2013) reboot. He is one of the survivors of the Endurance's shipwreck.

He seems to be the geek of the group and is wearing an ESC T-shirt.

Life

In addition for being the technician at the Endurance, Alex "has made a living largely through legally dodgy and flawed avenues, but only doing things he considers 'victimless crimes' although his definition of this is pretty wide".[1]

Yamatai Expedition (2013)

Right before the crew sets to sail towards Yamatai, Alex seeks sanctuary from the Endurance after hacking into a very certain and classified database of the government and getting caught about it. Conrad Roth is a bit doubtful about Alex joining in on the expedition but he eventually lets him come along.[2]

Alex astonishes James Whitman, or "Jimmy" as Alex refers to him, by knowing details about the network pulling James' expedition's funding and especially about James' divorce. "It's amazing what you can do with the internet and fifteen years of hacking experience," Alex explains when Whitman asks how Alex knows all that about him. Jonah has also told Alex about Whitman's funding problems, and after a while of talking Alex gets an idea of a way they "can kick up a bit of extra funding": using a 99.9% undetectable hacking software.[3] However, soon Alex rushes to the deck with his laptop and throws it to the sea. When Conrad Roth asks what happened, Alex answers "The 0.1%" - he and his software were detected after all.[4]

As Samantha Nishimura's uncle helps with funding the expedition the crew is finally able to start their journey to Yamatai. Alex has his own theories about the secret of Yamatai well before the Endurance even gets off the port:

One thing's for sure. The secret of Yamatai won't be in any book. There are people that make sure certain shit doesn't get written down. At least not in books. - - Yamatai is a cover-up by the Japanese government. It's probably full of all kinds of stuff they don't want us finding out about. - - If we find Yamatai and it's full of killer robots and genetic mutations, I called it.
Alex Weiss, Tomb Raider: The Beginning [5]

Alex is one of the survivor's of the shipwreck of Endurance at Yamatai. He's often with Joslin Reyes and Jonah Maiava, the first and the last time he ventures alone is when Lara arrives at the Shipwreck Beach and Alex has gone inside the wrecked Endurance to find some tools that Reyes needs. As Lara goes after him, she overhears that Alex got caught by the Solarii members that were also at the Endurance, but he managed to escape to lower parts of the ship. The Solarii think that the ship will go down soon, and they might as well leave Alex to die there.[6]

Lara goes through half-flooded hallways inside the Endurance and she eventually finds the injured Alex, whose leg is stuck under heavy debris. The path to Alex is blocked, and with clever use of the Rope Arrows, Lara clears the way to him. Alex tells to Lara that he didn't know what he was thinking when he decided to return to the Endurance: "I thought I could be the star in my own goddamned action movie... Guess it doesn't always work like that."[7] While Lara makes her way to Alex, his condition is worse moment by moment.

Death

When Lara finally reaches the badly injured Alex, he says how he finally impresses Lara.[8] Lara tries to move the debris off from Alex's leg, but it's too painful. The members of the Solarii can be heard getting closer to them, and after a few moemnts the Solarii are shooting right at Lara and Alex. Alex shoots at an explosive tank, getting rid of the couple of the Solarii, setting up a series of explosions. Lara gets a bit mad at Alex, shouting "What are you doing? You'll kill us!" Alex tells to Lara how he won't make it out of the Endurance, giving the tools of Reyes to Lara. As Lara refuses, Alex asks "How often does a guy like me get to be a hero?"[9] Alex urges Lara to leave and take the tools to Reyes and after some hesitation Lara does so, but just before she leaves she gives Alex a kiss on his cheek. Alex covers Lara as she leaves, and after Lara is safe he shoots at another explosive tank - killing himself and some of the Solarii.

Characterisation

"Alex is a bit of a joker, and although he's quite witty, he can be pretty crass. He also has a charming side and is more sensitive than he likes to let on. Alex has a fascination with conspiracy theories, alien abduction stories, and urban legends of all sorts."[10] Even when on Yamatai and being scared about everything that he and the other survivors have experienced, Alex still makes jokes to cover up his true feelings of being afraid.[11]

Friends

Jonah Maiava is Alex's good friend, as he gives Alex a hug when he arrives to seek sanctuary from the Endurance. Jonah is also encouraging Roth to let Alex in on the expedition.[12]

Alex has feelings towards Lara, maybe a crush as he wants to impress her and get her to finally notice him.[13]

Alex
  • Real Name: Alex Weiss
  • Age: 24
  • Nationality: American
  • Occupation: Ship's technician. Also a very skilled hacker and electronics geek.

Has made a living largely through legally dodgy and flawed avenues, but only doing things he considers 'victimless crimes' although his definition of this is pretty wide.

  • Interests: Hacking, specifically defacing websites for kudos or hacking online gambling sites for fun and profit. Reading up about all the new tech stuff, Bit-torrenting everything and gaming. He is also an avid conspiracy theorist.

Alex is the Endurance’s technician, handyman, and all-around "radio-shack genius". Despite his impressive technical and scientific background, Alex is the most "out-there" member of the crew. Alex's MacGyver-like talent for jury-rigging technical devices and being somewhat of a 'machine whisperer' is very useful to the survivors. He’s a bit of genius and could probably be enormously successful in the technology field if he actually applied himself properly.

Alex knows this about himself and thus tends to do the very bear minimum amount of work needed to do the job and always "just squeaks by" as a result. Alex is a bit of a joker, and although he's quite witty, he can be pretty crass. He also has a charming side and is more sensitive than he likes to let on. Alex has a fascination with conspiracy theories, alien abduction stories, and urban legends of all sorts.
